First of all, the Opium 39 is a racing-cruising monohull, equipped with a lifting keel. This magnificent Wauquiez sailboat owes its signature to the Marc Lombard firm. Its still up-to-date design and performance make it a very good racing-cruising unit.
INSPIRED BY THE 60′ OPEN OF OFFSHORE RACING
Inspired by the 60′ Open of offshore racing, the Opium 39 offers unique sensations at sea while providing comfort on board which is interesting in this category of sailboat. Its planing and powerful hull guarantees performance at all speeds, while its elegantly curved deck and its large cockpit bring together all the maneuvers. Rigging and fittings, carefully selected, are sized for the long haul.
A SECOND PROJECT, ALSO FOCUSED ON PERFORMANCE.
Former owner of Eric Delamarre’s Figaro 2 (our second yacht refit in 2019), this racing owner consults us for a second project focused on an approach to reducing the weight and improving the performance of his Wauquiez sailboat, a fast cruising sailboat.
It all starts with a conversion of the interior woodwork and certain exterior parts to carbon fiber, thus meeting the ambition of an experienced owner.
Initially, certain original doors made of plywood covered with a fine type of wood were replaced by doors made of sandwich panels made from a foam core and carbon fiber skins. A considerable weight gain, going from 8.4kg to 3.2kg per door.
Other doors were replaced by textile doors, selected by the customer.
A MIXTURE OF MATERIALS PROVIDING A CAREFUL AND SOBER DESIGN FOR THIS WAUQUIEZ SAILBOAT.
Then the door leaves of the saloon table and the chart table were also made of sandwich panels, creating a stylish atmosphere in a wooded environment. A mix of materials providing a neat and sober design.
Furthermore, we chose a mirror varnish for these pieces, contrasted by a matte varnish for the floors, with a higher foam density.
Finally, pre-impregnated carbon handrails replaced the original wooden and mirror-polished stainless steel ones. This enhancement ensures a secure grip reminiscent of wheel bars and racing finish.
Finally, the fiberglass cockpit bench is replaced by a carbon bench that can be dismantled and easily handled due to its weight. A first successful objective, which will have allowed a total saving of 69kg on all the modified parts and a makeover of the boat via a few touches of added carbon.
